It’s been a long summer and hopefully, your AC has gotten through it in one piece. Now is a great time to sit back and reassess your air conditioning. How long do you think your unit will last and how often it needs repairs are just a few of the things worth considering now that we are through the hottest part of the year. We want to help clear things up so you know whether it’s time to repair or replace your AC by looking at some factors you should consider.
Age of the Unit
It’s an inevitability that your AC unit will die out over time. Despite all of the advancements in HVAC technology over the previous decades, this is one thing that will always be impossible to overcome. Even today the typical air conditioner only lasts about ten to fifteen years. When your air conditioner reaches around that age, it’s time to start looking towards other options.
The Cost of Repair
So when the question is whether to repair or replace, it’s really important to consider the cost of a repair. Obviously, if the repair costs are more than the cost of replacement than it’s smart to replace. That goes without saying. However, it’s much harder to make a determination when the cost is somewhere in the middle. This is where we use a useful rule of thumb. Multiply the repair cost and the age of your system in years. If that costs more than the price of replacement than we recommend going with the replacement! If it’s less than a new unit, you should probably repair it. Hopefully, that tip gives you a good baseline to make the difficult decision of repairing or replacing your system when it inevitably comes up.
